The BFA Communications Specialist coordinates and implements all communications that supports the delivery of the Business and Financial Affairs (BFA) division’s strategic priorities. The individual will craft and execute communications to BFA employees that help create excitement, drive engagement, and shape culture in the division. The individual is also responsible for ensuring that communications to BFA university customers are timely and effective. The specialist will prioritize service excellence, strategic vision and innovation, and champion WWU’s ethics, culture, and values. The individual reports to the BFA Director of Strategy.

This is a two year project position with an expected end date of January 2024. 


Communications for the Business & Financial Affairs Division

•    Write, edit, and produce communications for BFA audiences including but not limited to presentations, scripts, briefing documents, intranet articles, website content, and employee communications, messages, and emails.
•    Collaborate with BFA leadership to craft and disseminate messaging.
•    Collaborate with internal stakeholders to position communications content in the context of overall organizational goals and messaging.
•    Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations and commitment to areas of diversity, inclusion, and equity.
•    Ensure messages are communicated in a clear, timely and effective manner, using a high-impact writing style and format.
•    Provide targeted support for Human Resources and Budget & Financial Planning as necessary to manage key employee and campus communications.
•    Tailor communication approaches and language to various stakeholders to clearly articulate the message and call to action.
•    Manage the divisional communications plan.
•    Utilize well-developed communication skills to effectively deliver critical information, gather information, and work with individuals holding multiple perspectives.
•    Implement new technologies, channels, or strategies as needed.
•    Review and edit communications drafted by internal stakeholders and make recommendations to ensure messaging is consistent with internal strategy and tone.
•    Continually improve, measure, and evaluate the effectiveness of employee communications strategy and methods.

Develop, Enhance, and Maintain the Divisional and Departmental Websites

•    Maintain and update the BFA website to include governance committee websites and materials for which BFA is responsible.
•    Coordinate with office staff regarding web design; develop pages with University Communications for the site, request and coordinate actual content as needed.
•    Coordinate the updating of the department websites within the division. 
•    Obtain permission(s) to publish photos as necessary.
•    Respond to requests for changes in availability, access, formats, and ADA compliance.
•    Obtain experience/training and use programs as necessary.

Event Coordination

•    In coordination with other VP BFA staff, plan and organize divisional special events.
•    Determine room requirements and oversee room set up for events; ensure the appropriate technology is in place and working.
•    Create specific communications action plans, timelines and defined deliverables that support the communication of internal messages.

Position closes January 17, 2022; application review begins January 6, 2022.


Required Qualifications/Skills

•    Bachelor’s degree and two years of experience in a business or higher education environment OR equivalent education/experience.

Technical Skills

•    Experience in designing, developing, and maintaining customized Drupal and/or WordPress websites.
•    Excellent, written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
•    Demonstrated success in writing, editing, and proofreading.
•    Demonstrated proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio).

Interpersonal Skills

•    Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple work tasks, and work with professionals across the University to complete work assignments.  
•    High attention to detail.
•    Excellent listening and communication skills and an ability to contribute to a friendly, cooperative team environment. 
•    Ability to employ discretion in communication and maintain confidentiality.
•    Promote an environment that fosters inclusive relationships and creates unbiased opportunities for contributions.

Preferred Qualifications

•    Experience in creating content for and managing social media platforms. 
•    Expert writer in internal/employee communications that are engaging and informative.
•    Advanced experience in Excel, Word, and Outlook.
•    Proficient in AP Style.
